I made oyakodon 親子丼 (my 2nd favorite food) the other day. I followed this recipe from Just One Cookbook and it came out pretty good! I overcooked the eggs a bit because I wasn’t sure if my son’s girlfriend liked runny eggs or not, but it was still yummy. I made a few servings using small single-serving pans, and for the last serving I used a lid to cover the pan. This one turned out the best, with plenty of sauce left, and the egg cooked more evenly. Must keep that in mind for next time!

Anyways, the leftovers were delicious. 😋

Koji Maintenance

“Koji” Cedar Park, 2023

While Mariko is away on vacation, I have been tasked with caring for her koji mixture. I have been mixing it every day, and tonight I refreshed the mixture in a new bottle with more rice, water, and koji. I hope I did it correctly!

As far as the old koji is concerned, Mariko said it’s very good for health, so I have been having a spoonful each morning. It tastes like a carbonated saké porridge. 😀

I’m not sure what she will use the koji mixture for, but I know she’s marinated steaks with it and they were delicious. Can’t wait!

Add Some Heat

“Scotch Bonnet” Cedar Park, 2023

Mariko made a big batch of curry before she went on vacation, and we’ve been enjoying it bit by bit. And we’ve been adding fresh scotch bonnet peppers that my mom brought with her when she visited. They are spicy!!! I love them. It’s always disappointing to me when a pepper has no heat, but these ones are way up there on the fire factor. 🔥🌶
