For lunch today we stopped by Tlayudas Metate, and I ordered the Tlayuda Mixta. If you haven’t had one before, tlayudas are a delicious Oaxacan dish made with a giant toasted tortilla packed with all kinds of tasty fillings. Mine was the “mixta,” loaded with beef, Oaxacan chorizo, black beans, melty Oaxaca cheese, a bit of “asiento” (pork butter), and a sprinkle of crisp cabbage. Every bite was amazing! Mariko ordered the Enchiladas de Mole (Enmoladas) which were also fanstastic. And the price was so inexpensive! Two huge dishes of food and two drinks for about $21 USD. Love it!

I spent the rest of the day working, but I did get to enjoy the view of the pretty clouds over the city.

It was back to work for me today, and I have to say, I’m really enjoying this whole workcation idea! Mexico City is only one hour ahead of US Central time, so it’s super easy to stay in sync with my coworkers. It’s been a great way to dip my toes into the digital nomad lifestyle.

For lunch, we kept it simple with eggs, soup, and coffee. Later in the evening, we walked over to a Japanese restaurant for sushi and yakitori, which turned out to be pretty tasty. After dinner, we did a little shopping at the market and then headed back to our Airbnb to watch the Independence Day festivities on TV. We decided to skip the crowds at the Zócalo for el Grito, but it was still fun to watch all the excitement from the comfort of the couch!

Mariko and I had such a blast today at a Mexican Cooking Class. We kicked things off with a trip to the local market, where our instructor showed us how to pick out the best tomatillos, limes, peppers, and all the other fresh ingredients. I loved learning those little tips that make shopping so much easier.

Back in the kitchen, the real fun began. We got our hands messy making corn tortillas from scratch, learned how to use a molcajete the proper way, and whipped up a delicious spread of guacamole, salsa, milpas soup, and chicken enchiladas. Everything tasted amazing, and by the end we were completely stuffed.

To top it off, we even got to sip some craft mezcal. It was the perfect finishing touch to an already awesome class. I’d definitely do it again! The instructor said that a second class would have more advanced techniques and of course different dishes.

We worked from our Airbnb this morning and did a co-work stream, then we headed out for brunch at Craving Crown. Coffee was a must, of course. I went for chilaquiles and Mariko had huevos al gusto – both hit the spot.

Once work was wrapped up, we wandered over to a nearby mall. It felt just like being back in the US, which was kind of funny. We had sushi at Moshi-Moshi (not very good, but not awful) and couldn’t resist grabbing ice cream at a little McDonald’s kiosk for about ten pesos (0.50 USD). Such a steal!

Later, we strolled around the neighborhood, picked up some fun socks from the street vendor as souvenirs, and found a cute little pot for plants. A mix of work, food, and exploring made for a pretty fun day. And also, a successful first day of workcation in a different country!

We kicked off the day with coffee at Camino a Comala. I had an Americano, Mariko had a Macchiato, and we shared an amazing Aguacate Toast that was just right for breakfast.

After that, we grabbed an Uber to the Anthropology Museum of Mexico. The museum is huge and full of incredible exhibits. We only managed to see about half of it, which gives us a great reason to come back to CDMX again to explore the rest.

Later, we took another Uber to meet up with our tour guide, Carlo, along with another guest, for a food walk. We tried so many delicious things, including chilaquiles, tacos al pastor, enchiladas en mole, and refreshing horchata. To top it off, we had churros filled with cajeta, wandered through the Zócalo, and picked up some pastries at Pastelería Ideal.

We ended the night with tamales and a taste of artisanal chocolate, which was the sweetest way to close out such a fun day.

The food tour was fun, though most of the dishes were ones we were already familiar with, so I think we’d enjoy a more “advanced” food tour next time. What really made it worthwhile, though, was the cultural background and history behind the foods, along with the little details that only a local could share. For example, our guide explained that Mexican Independence Day is coming up on the 16th, but the big celebration actually happens on the evening of the 15th. At 11 pm, the president appears at the official residence in the Zócalo, which sounds like an amazing experience to see in person. Maybe we will brave the crowds to see!

Today was the start of our workacation to Mexico City!

We started our trip flying from Austin to Dallas and then on to Mexico City, and we were lucky enough to get business class seats. So nice to be able to stretch out and enjoy decent food and adult beverages while getting hyped for Mexico. After landing at MEX, the Uber to our Airbnb was fast, easy, and inexpensive.

Once we checked in, we set out to explore the neighborhood. Our first stop was the grocery store to pick up a few essentials (Mariko’s toothpaste was removed by TSA in Austin), then we made our way over to Mercado Roma.

We found Mercado Roma on Google Maps, and had thought it was a market, but it’s actually a food hall. The food didn’t look too enticing, and we didn’t like the vibe so much, but we did enjoy some mezcal and chatting with the host about the different types of mezcal. She recommended us to go to Taquitos Frontera for dinner. The food was incredible – Volcanes Arrachera y Queso, Tacos al Pastor, Brocheta de Champiñones, and a variety of salsas. To go with it all, I had a Michelada Cubana. A perfect meal to start the trip!

Today’s port-of-call was Cozumel, Mexico. We’ve been here once before, but this time we took a ferry to Playa del Carmen on the Mexican mainland and then joined the tour to the Tulum Ruins. The ruins were the one thing I really wanted to see on this trip so I was stoked to be able to visit them with a tour guide who explained the history and of course the human sacrifices! But seriously, although the ruins are not very large, the history was amazing and the setting, right on the cliff was stunning. It was well worth the trip!

After finishing our visit to the Tulum ruins, we had a few minutes to grab a bite to eat at the restaurant. The chips and salsa were so good (and spicy!), the ceviche was fresh and yummy, and the enchiladas verdes were delicious. I had the fish tacos which were pretty good, except the tortillas basically disintegrated when I tried to pick them up, so I had to eat them with a fork. But still enjoyable, especially washing it all down with an ice-cold Negra Modelo.

Next, it was back to the shops near the dock in Playa del Carmen, and then we caught the second-to-last ferry to Cozumel and the ship.

The clouds this evening were the best of the trip, and I got plenty of good photos. We’re really fortunate to have some awesome weather so far!

And I also got photos of people taking photos.
