Tonight we tried Dai-chan, a little okonomiyaki spot near the house. The decor feels straight out of the 70s or 80s, at least to my untrained eye, and there was a great run of Enka playing while we sipped beers and waited on our okonomiyaki and yakisoba. Everything came out delicious, and the two people running the place were so kind. That kind of old school ambience is hard to fake, and honestly a big part of the charm. Best of all, it’s just a short walk from home. This one’s going into the regular rotation for sure.

We made okonomiyaki tonight, which was awesome! It’s my absolute favorite food, and tonight’s was a little different because instead of yakisoba noodles, Mariko used whole wheat spaghetti. She added a little baking powder to the boiling water, which made the texture of the noodles pretty close to yakisoba. We’ll definitely be doing this again if we don’t happen to have yakisoba handy!

FYI, we’ve been using this Tiger electric hot plate for years now, and it’s been great. It’s got three different cooking surfaces: a pan, a grill, and takoyaki pan. And it’s very easy to clean since it comes apart easily. Another cool thing is that it has a carrying handle which makes it easy to move around. We’ve taken it over to friends’ houses to use several time. I highly recommend the Tiger electric hot plate or something similar.

Tonight we enjoyed a homemade Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki. The yakisoba and cabbage give this style of okonomiyaki a different texture than Osaka-style, where the cabbage is mixed with batter. Another thing that makes Hiroshima-style different is the addition of a fried egg… yum! We also had a special sauce which was thinner than the type we have on Osaka-style, but it tasted great. I admit that I prefer Osaka-style, but it’s kind of like comparing a 5-star food to a 4.8-star food – you can’t go wrong with either.

I hope you had a good day!
