Maintenance Ride with Kiki

“Moto Selfie” Cedar Park, 2022

I went for a maintenance ride today with Kiki. The maintenance refers to keeping my riding skills maintained and sharp. 😀 It’s important for me to keep the motorcycling skills up since it is a dangerous activity, so riding around the neighborhood, with plenty of slow turns and stop signs is a good way to practice.

When I first began riding, I’d be nervous whenever I had to come to a full stop. Since I cannot flat-foot both feet (my inseam is maybe only 28″?), I’d have to tip-toe. And also, getting the timing right of putting down my feet as soon as I stopped moving forward was a challenge. But after a bit of practice, I learned to just slide my butt off to the left side, and put down my left foot only. I can flat-foot on that side, and it is very stable and comfortable. And I have gotten the timing right for stopping. Basically, I come to a stop kind of forcefully at the end, instead of a gentle slow-down. Now coming to a full stop is almost second nature, although I do still have to give it a little bit of thought, especially to make sure I don’t put my foot down on any slippery oily stuff.

It was a nice little ride, but I do need to adjust my clutch lever. I had moved it up since my motocross boots needed extra room, but I don’t have those boots anymore so I can lower the lever to make it easier and faster to shift. I actually missed a couple shifts today because I was tired from a long run in the morning, and that reminded me that I need to adjust that lever!

If you have a few minutes, why not come along for the ride? 😄

New Camera Angles on the Motorcycle

I was inspired by Youtuber Seaman / Japanese Moto Girl’s videos to try out a couple of new camera angles. For my previous videos I used the chin-mount, but I think I now prefer the chest-mount. I just need to angle it up a bit more (as you can see in the video). I also put the GoPro on the handlebars for the selfie view, which I also like. But since I only have one GoPro, it’s not convenient to switch out the one camera to different mounting locations.

I guess if I ever get serious about making more motorcycling videos, I can get another GoPro, but for now, I’ll be satisfied with knowing it can be done.

Enjoy the video!

I stopped by the BMW Motorrad dealer today to pick up a few parts I ordered and enjoyed checking out all the beautiful bikes. These R nineT Scramblers were so cool!

Always fun to check out the toys. 😀

Motorcycle Check

“POV Test” Cedar Park, 2022

This evening I did a bit of maintenance on Kiki (my motorbike): check oil, check coolant level, and check battery water level. I also removed some wiring I had added to rig up a Garmin GPS unit that I no longer use.

Then I went for a few laps around my neighborhood testing out different GoPro settings, and I have found that on my GoPro Hero9, Wide with High stabilization seems to be best. This is for the chin-mounted camera position. I want to add a handlebar cam that points back at me, and I have a mount set up for either GoPro or iPhone. I just need to test it out. Maybe later this weekend. 😀

Saturday Morning Ride

This morning I woke up early and went for a fun motorcycle ride. First, I went to Lime Creek Road which is a twisty two-lane route that is one of the better ones in the area for motorcyclists. Even though it is very close to where I live, I have only ridden it a couple of times, but I highly recommend this route!

After that, I rode around downtown Austin before stopping for coffee at Sa-Ten, and then headed back home. A fun morning!

Please check out the video I made of the Lime Creek Road portion of the ride:

I hope you had a nice day!

Motorbike Ride in Austin, Texas

“Austin from Congress Avenue” Austin, 2022

This morning I went with Kiki, my 2007 BMW F650 GS motorbike, on a ride to downtown Austin. I wanted to leave early to beat the traffic, but unfortunately got a late start at 9am. When we arrived downtown, there were so many cars. It’s no fun to be stuck in stop-and-go traffic on a motorcycle.

However, it was pretty cool to see so many people out and about having a good time. When I rode up Congress Avenue towards the capitol, I saw lots of tourists and it made me feel pretty good knowing they are visiting at the perfect time of year when the weather is not too hot. And of course us locals really enjoy it too!

I made a video of the ride, so if you have spare time, please watch 🙏 (at the end of this blog post)
