This summer, our backyard deck has become something of a zoo, with many different types of birds, pesky squirrels, and even lizards. Most times, it’s pretty quiet, but at about 6 pm, it becomes a madhouse! I really love to see the small birds hanging out with the larger ones. It’s so fun!

Recently a pair of white-winged doves has been coming by for water and a bit of food. I haven’t paid doves much attention since they are very common, but they are actually very interesting! Not only do they move more slowly and gracefully than the other birds, but they have really nice markings, especially when they spread their wings.

I hope you had a nice day!

Miso-Glazed Cod from Costco

The miso-glazed cod from Costco was just okay. The fish was moist, the texture was nice, and it looked yummy, but there wasn’t a whole lot of flavor… it’s probably not a keeper for us. However, Mariko’s homemade side dish of watermelon radishes with bacon in a cream sauce was amazing! I’m looking forward to more of that, but we usually don’t think of radishes when we shop. Maybe we should change that?

Early Voting

“Early Voting” Cedar Park, 2020

I usually vote early, and did so again today. There are a few run-offs in my district which is what today’s vote was for. Interestingly, I voted for three female candidates (3 of 5 candidates today were women), and my previous vote for the presidential primary was also for a female candidate. I think men are just too emotional. I say that semi-jokingly. But seriously, I usually vote for the candidate who takes a rational and data-driven approach to issues, as opposed to “letting their faith” drive their decisions. This time, all the candidates were good choices, so it was tough to choose the ones I did. But I’ll be happy to vote for any of them when they go up against their opponents across the aisle later this year.

In related news, the polling location was inside one of our local supermarkets, and was quick, safe, and hassle-free. Everyone was wearing masks, social-distancing, and the pens and voting machines were all sanitized. Very well done!

This afternoon Koa practiced his parallel parking. He’s actually really good at it! As you can see, I set up our trash bins (there’s another one in front of the car) to simulate parked cars, and he’s able to maneuver the ol Subaru pretty skillfully. I’m impressed!

His driving test is coming up… I hope he does well.

Another beautiful sunset seen on my evening bicycle ride around the neighborhood. Lots of people were outside walking, but I seemed to be the only weird one taking photos. 😜
