こんばんは!How’s it going?

Today’s photo is of my son Koa’s pajama bottoms that he has been wearing. My oldest brother brought back these very light and comfortable bottoms from his travels in Southeast Asia last year for the kids and Mariko as Christmas gifts. The pajamas have a great elephant 🐘 design pattern on them… aren’t they great? Bay (15) and Mariko wore them right away, but Koa just started wearing his. I think he’s learning the value of wearing comfy pajamas! (He usually just wears sports shorts and a t-shirt to bed)

As for myself, I usually wear a large, soft t-shirt and then a pair of light pajama bottoms that my wife bought for me in Japan. They kind of look like jinbei bottoms and are really comfy – perfect for the summer. And I also have some similar bottoms that my brother gave me as a gift that has a honu (sea turtle) embroidered on it. They are really great as well.

But soon we’ll have to start wearing our warmer pajamas since the seasons are changing. 😞

I hope you had a nice Friday, and let’s enjoy the weekend!

こんばんは!Hi, how’s it going?

Today was the last Undoukai, or Sports Day, for our kids as they wrap up their Japanese school careers at Austin Japanese School. Bay will be graduating this year, and Koa has decided not to continue. I can’t believe we’ve gone to 11 undoukais, going back to 2006! Time sure flies!

My oldest son and his classmates decided to have some fun this year by holding their arms behind them as they did the obstacle course and the 100 meter dash. It was pretty funny, although one of the kids fell twice. He was okay.

Besides the sporting events, we enjoyed a delicious bento lunch 🍱 which I mentioned in my previous post. There was karaage (fried chicken), mini-sausages, onigiri (rice balls), edamame, tomatoes, broccoli, potato salad, and tamagoyaki (scrambled egg). It was delicious!

I’m going to miss Undoukai, but at the same time, it will be nice to not have to go… it can be a lot of work, especially when we have to help set up the different events. But I am glad we all got to experience an important part of Japanese culture. 🇯🇵 FYI, the White team won this year… 😫

I hope you had a nice weekend! I’ll leave you with some videos I took of today’s events.

Goodnight!

こんばんは!How’s it going?

Today’s photo is of this morning’s clouds, and the sun coming up. Not too long after, the overcast skies were gone and we had a beautiful day.

Tomorrow is the annual “Undoukai” or Sports Day at the Japanese school 🇯🇵, so today Mariko spent a lot of time in the kitchen preparing our food. Lunch is kind of a fun part of the day, after half of the sporting events are over and all the families relax for a bit and get to eat yummy bento. I always look forward to our bento because it’s so delicious!

Anyways, she was very busy so I helped out by going to the grocery store and then grilling burgers for dinner. 🍔 Of course she had to contribute to dinner too, and for the burger dinner, she baked fresh sesame-seed buns. I have to say, the burgers turned out great. 😄

More about Undoukai tomorrow, so for now, have a good evening!

Cross-country for Koa

こんばんは!

Today was Koa’s final Cross-country Meet of the season and he said he did great in the race. He finished 95th, which doesn’t seem so great, but today’s event was the District Meet so there were 8 schools competing. He was a little sad because he really enjoyed Cross-country, except for the first week since it was difficult to get in running shape.
I hope he wants to run again next year! It’s a good way to exercise, and it’s nice that he is building up some good experiences while running.

I took today’s photo on the way to pick him up from school after the meet. This road is one that I run along a lot, although I haven’t put on my running shoes in months! I should probably hit the pavement again soon.

This evening I started watching Season 1 (2012) of the Japanese dorama, “Doctor-X”. Right now Season 4 is showing and I’ve seen ads for it over the years but never watched any of them. But I did some research and found out that the series has huge ratings! Like over 20% viewership… that is crazy!

I’ve watched the first three episodes, and am getting into it. It’s pretty good, but I don’t think it is spectacular or anything. Still, better than a lot of other dorama so I’ll continue watching… And since there are 3 completed seasons already, there’s plenty to watch.

Have a good evening!

They Grow up So Fast

こんばんは!Hi, how’s it going? I’m doing ok, but I have been sneezing all day because of allergies. It always happens when I do yard work. 😷

Today’s photo is of my 15-year-old son’s and his friend’s wristbands for the 2016 Austin City Limits Music Festival 🎶. It’s their first time there, and I dropped them off this morning, then picked them up tonight. I can’t believe they are old enough to be going to concerts by themselves!

People always say that kids grow up so fast, but we’re really experiencing that these days. It’s hard to believe that Bay is preparing for college already. Where has the time gone? 😮

I’ll have to remember to be more mindful of our time together while we still have the kids at home. 😊
