こんばんは。How was your Tuesday?

Today is my younger son’s 13th birthday… yes, he’s a teenager! And now both my kids are in their teens. I can’t believe time flies so quickly. 😱

Koa has requested the same birthday dinner this year: karaage (Japanese style fried chicken). As you can see in the photo, the chicken was piled high! In fact, I knew there would be a mountain of karaage again so I got out my ultra-wide-angle lens for my dslr to give it even more emphasis. It was so delicious, that I am thinking that I might want karaage for my birthday dinner as well. 😄

Seems like these days I’ve been posting about food A LOT. Well, yes. I guess it’s fun to take photos of the yummy food that Mariko prepares, and then I need to share that of course. 😘

In other news, I’ve been enjoying the book “The School for Good and Evil”. It’s fun and funny! But, I have a reading problem in that I find so many books I want to read, but cannot read fast enough to get to all of them. And the sales that Amazon has on their kindle books doesn’t help either. My library of unread books keeps growing and I may never be able to catch up. 📚 Oh well. しょうがない

I hope you had a nice day!

“Graduating Class” Austin, 2017

Today, my 15-year-old son (second from the left in the photo above) graduated from Japanese school here in Austin. I can’t believe he has been going for 11 years! I’m so proud of him for sticking with it and completing his studies. And of course, it’s been a long 11 years for Mariko too, who put in a lot of effort to help with schoolwork and also helping with school duties. Since my Japanese language abilities are so low, the most I could do to help was to support Mariko in whatever she needed.

Today at the graduation ceremony, the graduating class of 7 students gave a speech and presented a slideshow of photos for the rest of the school and parents. Seeing the pictures of the kids as they grew up together was really touching. It was also a bit sad to know that this part of his life is complete. Understandably, there were many tears shed by the parents in the audience. 😭

I hope Bay keeps up with his Japanese skills! I’m sure it will be a big help to him in his life.

Comfort Food

こんばんは。How’s it going? Have a nice Thursday? Mine was non-stop busy at work. It’s good work, though, and I really enjoy what I do. Every day is a challenge but I’m satisfied with the project that I get to take part in. I’m grateful for that!

Lau lau

Tonight’s photo is of a Hawaiian dinner that we enjoyed at home. Packed away in our freezer was a package of lau lau that my parents had brought back from Maui on one of their trips back to the islands. 🌴 It’s pork and chicken 🐷🐔 wrapped in taro leaves, although sometimes spinach is substituted. I think this was the real deal though.

When I was growing up, my grandparents would visit us twice a year from Maui, and packed in their huge boxes were the fixings for a huge Hawaiian feast. So, I’ve been eating lau lau for most of my life… it’s really a comfort food! As a kid, I didn’t really like lau lau I admit… but now I love it! Lau lau and rice is so good. 😄🍴

Concert night

This evening, Koa had a concert at the nearby high school. 🎼 His middle school band is pretty amazing! Koa’s a percussionist and tonight he played the marimba using 4 mallets at a time. It was so cool, and I am so proud of him! He works very hard at percussion and it pays off big time. In the photo below, Koa is on the far right.

こんばんは。How’s it going?

We made it to the weekend! I’m kind of stoked because I get to read a Bakabon book, as you can see in the photo above. It’s got English and Japanese so I’ll be able to practice my reading too. And it should be fun!

Today I took my 15-year-old son to get his learner’s permit. I can’t believe he’s almost 16 and going to drive on his own soon! Time really flies… We are doing a parent-taught course, so I’ll be taking him driving but I’m not sure where there is a good, safe parking lot to practice. I guess some local research is in order. 😄

Ok, it’s time to read some バカボンのパパ!

こんばんは。How are you this evening?

Our 12-year-old son is not feeling well today, with general tiredness and a sore throat. When I picked him up from school, he immediately reclined the seat and fell asleep. He got a good nap because we had to pick up his brother so he slept for about 1/2 an hour in the car as you can see in the photo above. I know he was out cold because when we got home, he said, “We’re here already? That was fast!” And we actually got home a little later than usual.

Our family is generally pretty healthy, rarely getting the flu or other common illnesses, although Koa and Mariko suffer from allergies quite a bit. And Bay never gets sick! It’s really weird but amazing.

I’m hoping Koa feels better after a good night’s rest. I’m sure he’ll bounce back in no time!

Stay well, everyone.

Happy Chinese New Year! 🐓

As you may know, I am part Chinese and we celebrate the Lunar New Year by visiting my cousin’s in San Antonio to relax, feast on Chinese food, hand out red envelopes, and then play Mahjong.

They grow up so fast

"2004 vs 2016" Redondo Beach, 2004, 2016
“2004 vs 2016” Redondo Beach, 2004, 2016

こんにちは。How’s it going?

I wanted to share a picture of my son and my niece that shows them in 2004 and then recently last December. 12 years!

We visit the Redondo Beach Pier often when in SoCal, and this scale has been there forever. I am amazed that kids grow up so fast and that time flies by so quickly – it makes me a bit sad because I do miss the days when they were tiny. But I am excited to see what the future holds for them!

I hope you are having a good day.

P.S. In case you are wondering, I did get the kids’ permission to post their photos! 😝
