Today Mariko and I drove up to the town of Hico, Texas and joined our friends in seeing The Bobby Kerr Experience. Bobby Kerr is a cowboy who works with American mustangs and founded the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.
Today’s event was a new kind of show for him. I gathered that he had (still has?) a show he’d perform at rodeos, but now he is putting on a 2-hour show at his ranch, with demonstrations of how he trains young mustangs. It was fascinating and fun! He is also a poet, so the show is sprinkled with several Texas poetry readings. Very nice!

What was really interesting was that Hico is in rural Texas, and everyone at the show seemed to be local cowboys and cowgirls, or at least true Texans. There were so many cowboy hats and boots there… It was pretty cool to see a gathering like this. I couldn’t ever be part of that world, but the sense of Texas pride at the event was palpable.

We had purchased the dinner package, which included a beer and a nice spread of Texas barbecue. I went a little nuts and piled on the brisket, but I was happy I did because it was excellent! By the time the show started, I was nice and full.
Here are some more photos from the event. If you have the chance to see it, I recommend it!

We saw Koa’s final percussion concert tonight. He has been part of the percussion section and with the same percussion director since middle school, so this final concert was a big one.
It’s always a tear-filled speech from the director, who every year has to say goodbye to the seniors, so the evening was filled with a whole range of emotions: laughter at seeing the slideshow and photos, awe at listening to the amazing music, and sadness hearing the farewell speeches.
What a night!

My friend and I went to see Pompo: The Cinéphile at the theater as part of our anime-watching habit. Whenever GKIDS has a special screening, he buys the tickets, and I buy the beer (the theater has beer on tap!). It’s something I really look forward to!
Anyways, I thought the movie was excellent. The plot is basically the making of a movie, but there are so many little inspirational nuggets thrown in that I was kind of blown away and even got a little emotional. What a movie! And maybe it was the beer too. But regardless, Pompo: The Cinéphile left me with a positive attitude and life seemed just a bit brighter.
A very nice little gem of a film. Go see it!
