Here’s the osechi that Mariko and her friends made for the new year. They spent two days preparing all the dishes (I helped by providing cocktails) and everything tasted amazing! I love starting out the year with osechi – it’s such a treat!

And we also had ozōni, the traditional soup with mochi. Yummy!

Happy New Year! 明けましておめでとう!

My wife gave me this Camp Gear Book for my Christmas gift this year. It’s awesome!

It is organized into 2 or 4-page spreads, each featuring a person and his/her/their camping gear and notes about them. There are also nice photos of camp site setups and camping vehicles. It’s really cool!

Of course, it’s all in Japanese so I don’t understand most of it, but it is actually pretty good practice for me as I study the language.

I love this gift! It’s even better than the Super Cub book I received a few years ago!

“Dark Plane” 2021

We made it home to Austin safely this evening. I wore my N95 mask at the airport and on the plane, and I felt pretty safe. Maybe the airport was kind of sketchy because people weren’t masking as much, but on the plane I think we were okay with the filtered ventilation and mandatory masking. In addition, we had empty seats next to us so that was nice.

On a negative note, I watched The Green Knight but I thought it was horrible. 😜
