Ink and Water

Yesterday I was watching some videos about Inktober projects, and one of them featured a cool technique in which you sketch with water-soluble ink using a fountain pen, and then go over with a water brush to add some shading. I don’t have any water brushes yet, so I just used my watercolor brush to give it a try. And I am pleased with the results! It’s really fun, actually.

For these two sketches, I started with pencil, then used my Pilot Metropolitan (M) and Pilot Namiki Blue/Black to draw the lines on watercolor paper. After waiting for the ink to dry, I erased the pencil then used the brush and water to pull the color from the ink.

I like how it turned out, and have ordered a Sailor Fude De Mannen pen and a bottle of Rohrer & Klingner Verdigris ink to do more of these types of sketches. I can’t wait!

I was checking out some videos about the really cool Orient Triton watch today, when another video was recommended which was all about the Seiko SNK809. It got me interested in trying on the original black watchband that came with my Seiko, and when I replaced the band, I fell in love with it again. As much as I love NATO and ZULU bands, the Seiko SNK809 has a clear display back (so you can see the inner workings of the watch) and it’s a shame to have it covered by the NATO-style watch band. So, I went back to the conventional band and have been enjoying quite a bit.

I also noticed that although I have lots of different color watch bands, I keep going back to plain black. I think it just looks so nice. Simple and clean on the wrist. So, after trying out many bands, I have to say that a plain black nylon/canvas strap is what I like best.

I hope you had a nice day!

Tonight Koa performed with his 2018 high school marching band for the final time. Marching season is over, but it was an amazing year for the kids – the band won first place in the UIL State Competition which means they are state champions for their division (6A)! It’s an amazing accomplishment and the first championship for them in school history.

Here’s a link to the local Austin news report about the band, and also below is their performance at the UIL competition:

Next up for Koa is a trip to Indianapolis to perform with his percussion group at PASIC. So busy, but he loves percussion. がんばって Koa!
