Today we started off the new year in typical Japanese fashion – we feasted on Osechi 🍥 and drank saké 🍶 all day while watching Japanese new years specials on TV. 📺😆

Did you know that each different food in osechi-ryōri represents some kind of good fortune? I don’t know all of the meanings, but if you are curious, you can check out the Wikipedia osechi page. They list some of the most common foods.

Mariko prepares our osechi, and I look forward to eating it every year. It takes a couple days but it’s a worthwhile tradition. The food is delicious, beautiful, and it’s a great way to start the new year. 🎊

I hope you had a great day!

Merry Christmas everyone! 🎅 Today the entire immediate family was together to celebrate Christmas, open presents, eat our traditional meals, and enjoy each other’s company. It began with the handing out of the stockings and then we dug into our brunch, which is always bagels, lox, roast beef, pastrami, corned beef, potato/mac salad. In addition, we had a few Jamaican patties. 🍴😃

After we stuffed ourselves, it was time to open presents! 🎁 I think everyone received some nice gifts this year, and our suitcases will be full of goodies for the return trip home.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing, hanging out, a little street football, and then our traditional Christmas dinner – the Hawaiian feast! 🌴 It was delicious as usual. Lomi salmon, kalua pig, chicken and pork lau-lau, two types of poke, chicken long rice, spare ribs, and macaroni salad. Once again we were stuffed with good food. One of the highlights every year!

My mom makes some amazing Jamaican food (she grew up in Port Antonio, Jamaica) and over the holidays, she always prepares a huge Jamaican feast. The Jamaican dinner will be for Christmas eve, but today we had a Jamaican breakfast, which consisted of ackee and saltfish and hard dough bread. It’s a super-special treat to eat this yummy food!

こんばんは!How’s it going?

Today was one of those crazy weather days we have once or twice a year here in Texas, where the temperature swings drastically. During the day, we enjoyed a nice 75° F breeze but around 5 PM, the wind 🌬 picked up and the cold front came down from the north. Mariko went out for dinner and when we entered the restaurant, it was about 65° F, but when we left the restaurant 45 minutes later, it was about 50°! Then later, in the evening we went to see a late movie at 10 PM and it was already at the 32° F freezing point! ❄️

I mentioned we went out for dinner, and as you can see from the photo above, we enjoyed Vietnamese food at Pho Thanh Nhi. Mariko got a big bowl of pho, and I had a bowl of egg noodle soup, which was delicious! 🍜 As the wind howled outside the restaurant windows, it was perfect to enjoy a nice hot bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup!!

I hope you had a nice Saturday. Stay warm!
