Tremble All You Want 勝手にふるえてろ (2017) – Movie Review

Plot: 24-year-old office worker “Yurika”, awkward, offbeat, and still carrying a torch for cool and popular middle school crush “Ichi”, tries to locate said crush and meet up, while fending off the advances of an uncool co-worker “Ni”.

Okay, so the story doesn’t seem special, but the “awkward and offbeat” nature of Yurika is the reason that Tremble All You Want 勝手にふるえてろ turns out to be a good movie. Specifically, it’s Matsuoka Mayu‘s (松岡茉優) portrayal of Yurika which is notable. I’d seen her in supporting roles in a few doramas over the years, but she amazed me with her range in the starring role.

************ SPOILER ALERT *************

As I mentioned, the plot was standard romance fare, but the interesting twist is that Yurika lives in a semi-fantasy world, imagining conversations with people that acquaintances real life. At the beginning of the movie, these seem like normal conversations with friends or close acquaintances, but we soon suspect that she doesn’t have any real relationship with these people and is just imagining the conversations.

This fact is made clear to us towards the end of the film with a wonderful scene in which Yurika actually sings her feelings to the audience, looking directly at the camera. It’s pretty amazing and she pulls it off without skipping a beat. She doesn’t have a great singing voice, but that just makes it feel more real and engaging.

The end of the movie, unfortunately, wasn’t very satisfying as there were many loose ends that I would have liked to see resolved. For instance, does she mend her friendship with Kurumi? Will she ever get found out about impersonating a classmate? Does she open up more to the real people she had imaginary conversations with? Also, it seems a little unbelievable that after carrying a torch for 10 years, that flame could be extinguished instantly, especially since Yurika and Ichi had a seemingly magical connection when they finally met. Thinking about it some more, a sequel or continuation would be welcomed! 😄

Unresolved plotlines aside, I think Tremble All You Want 勝手にふるえてろ is well-worth your viewing time. I’m really looking forward to more films with Matsuoka Mayu in the lead role.

My rating: 7/10

A friend of ours brought back fresh hamachi (yellowtail) from Hawaii and my wife, along with several other lucky people, received some nice cuts. She prepared some sashimi for us, and also cooked some of the fish in a wonderful miso soup. It was delicious!

But that’s not all, because she also prepared tonkatsu (breaded and fried pork cutlet), served with cabbage and tonkatsu sauce. We also like to have it with karashi (hot mustard). It was pretty nice to have both karashi and wasabi (for the sashimi) out on the table. What a yummy meal!

Five Watches I Like to Wear

こんばんは。How’s it going?

As some of you might know, I love wrist-watches. I don’t have a huge collection, nor are there any expensive pieces, but I enjoy wearing them, watching videos from other watch enthusiasts, and “window” shopping online.

Today I took two of my watches to a watch repair shop to get the batteries replaced. The Casio tide and moonphase watch (AQW100-1AV) with stainless-steel band has been dead for a couple years now, and the Goofy watch hasn’t run in about 30 years. But both are back in action!

The Goofy watch, which I bought when I was in high school, is too small for my wrist, so I gave it to my wife. I don’t think she had seen it before, but she’s happy to have it! I’m surprised actually. 😄 It just needs a 16mm band.

The Casio aviator watch (MTP4500D-1AV) with the orange hands is my newest addition, just purchased last week. It’s got a quartz movement, a stopwatch function, and a slide-rule bezel. I think it looks nice, and after I replaced the metal band with the black silicone strap, it’s very comfortable on the wrist – the most comfortable in my little collection. I prefer automatic movement over quartz, but I loved the look of this Casio and the price was nice – just $33 on sale!

My favorite watch is still the Seiko SXK007 diver, followed closely by the Seiko SNK809 field watch, but the new Casio aviator watch has quietly entered the mix.

This evening I watched Roma. It was a grippingly beautiful and heartbreaking story – the scene at the hospital left me a wreck, the ocean scene had me on the edge of my seat, followed by another incredibly emotional moment on the beach. Wow. One of the best films I’ve seen in a long time. Definitely recommended.
