“Last Light” Cedar Park, 2017
We made it to Friday. Keeping my friends and family who are in the Caribbean and Florida in my thoughts…
daily slice-of-life photo blog of a Gen-X dad

Dinner, dishes, and drawing. That’s a typical evening for me lately. I am enjoying life!
The pork donburi with shishito peppers and eggs was delicious, and then while doing the dishes, I enjoyed the pretty clouds as they floated by. 🌥

Tonight’s drawing is actually a copy of a previous drawing, which I scanned, printed, and then applied ink with a brush. It was difficult to control (the brush was too long and soft) but fun to try something new. I think I prefer the line portraits right now.

To see all the sketches I’ve been working on, you can check out the Flickr album “My Sketching Journey”, or my Instagram account barron.sketches which I created just for posting sketches, watercolors, and stationery items.
I hope you had a good Thursday!

Tonight’s post will be a bit scattered, but whatever. I’m not writing to win any awards. 😁
For dinner, Koa and I had gyoza, which I am getting pretty good at preparing. We usually buy pre-made, frozen gyoza and so I just have to heat them up… not really cooking, just preparing. Anyway, the method I use it so arrange them into a circle in the skillet, with the flat side down. Next, add some vegetable oil and sesame oil to the bottom and fry over medium-high heat. After a few minutes, I add in about 1/3 cup of water, then cover the pan with a lid and steam for another 4 or 5 minutes over medium heat. Then, remove the cover and cook until the liquid disappears.
Finally, I take a large plate (that is wider than the gyoza circle), place it over the gyoza, then flip the pan, plate, and gyoza over. That way, the crispy golden part is facing up for serving.
Serve with a dipping sauce of ponzu and rayu, and bowls of white rice and you have a nice meal! I only wish we had miso soup to go with it…

Lately there have been some pretty cool cloud formations in the sky, so of course, I had to take photos of them. I think the clouds in Texas can get pretty huge and impressive and I am always amazed at the natural beauty. I still don’t fully understand how clouds form, and frankly, I’d rather not know and keep the mystery alive. 🙂☁️

Lastly, I did a little bit of research on how to create a nice grey color using the paints I currently have in my watercolor palette and I think I found a good combination. It’s basically pthalo blue mixed with a bit of orange, and a touch of red. It’s easy to make it warmer or cooler just by varying the ratio. I also produced a nice grey using the prima blue that came with the watercolor set I bought.
Next, I want to try to make some dark colors for shadows. I am not sure I can produce that with the colors I have now, but I read that pthalo green is needed to make the color I want. We’ll see!
I hope you had a nice day.

Today we had some more lovely clouds, as a storm system rolled through the area. At around 1 PM, I took a little break from work and walked outside the building to take the photo above. The sky was a bright blue, but I used Lightroom to drop the blue’s luminance down so that it looks like a dark sky. I think it looks a lot like a moonlit night sky.
I didn’t notice it when I took the photo, but there is actually an airliner flying in front of the clouds. I was surprised to spot it in Lightroom!
Later in the day, I took another photo of the storm clouds to the north. It was pretty scary, and the rain that followed was most intense of the year!

Check out how crazy it got:
I hope everyone stays dry! Have a good evening wherever you might be.

It seems like it’s been a while since we’ve had some fun clouds in the sky here. So it’s nice to welcome them back! 😄 It makes my commute more fun and brightens my day.
Today is the first day of June. 2017 is flying past, isn’t it? Tomorrow is the last day of the school year for my kiddos, which is wild. It just snuck up on me.
I guess time is starting to pass quickly for me, and I should slow down and savor the moments as they happen. This evening I went shoe shopping with my sons… seems like just an everyday thing, but I had a lot of fun with them! (They would think that is weird of me to say) It’s interesting to see how their taste in clothes and shoes changes as they grow up, and also the differences between the two brothers. They are really quite different! I love it.
Anyways, I am feeling a little nostalgic now. 😌
Have a good evening!
