こんばんは。How’s it going?

Tonight we stopped by Twin Panda restaurant and picked up some Indonesian food for dinner. I’ve only had Indonesian food a few times before but enjoyed it every time. Even the one time we went to an Indonesian restaurant in Akasaka and the food was too spicy to eat!

Anyways, the dinner was delicious (I am not sure what the names of the dishes were) and it was fun to chat with the owner (I think he was the owner) about Indonesia and Japan, where he recently visited. He recommends we come back on Sunday and ask for the special Indonesian dish, which changes every weekend. I can’t wait!

Later on, we went to the high school to listen to the percussion ensemble of which Koa is a part of. It is a preview concert of the music they will perform next month in November as part of the PASIC program. They sounded awesome!

こんばんは。How’s it going?

I’ve been practicing ukulele quite a bit lately, but my fretting wrist hurts a lot. I think it’s a combination of two things. First, my wrist when I play ukulele is at an awkward angle and thus causing unnecessary strain on my muscles and other connective bits (tendons?). Secondly, the watchband that I switched to a couple of months ago may have been too tight and restricted movement. It’s odd, but because the watchband is so comfortable I don’t realize that I’ve been wearing it too tightly.

But I really need to work on holding the ukulele in the correct position, with wrist straight and bending my fingertips more. When I use this technique, there’s no pain, but once I go back to bending my wrist a lot, I can feel it hurting.

Anyways, I’ve been learning City of Stars from LA LA LAND, and also Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny. They are both really fun! And I’ve been recording my practices on my phone, but the quality is pretty bad… both my playing and the video. But it’s a fun experience.

I hope you had a nice Sunday!

Chihayafuru: Kami no Ku (ちはやふる 上の句)

こんばんは。How’s it going?

This evening I watched a movie that I’ve wanted to see for a while now. Chihayafuru: Kami no Ku (ちはやふる 上の句) is the movie version of a manga and anime, and stars Hirose Suzu as a high school student who forms a karuta club. Karuta is a game combining Japanese poems, cards, and quick reflexes. It’s fascinating to watch! Anyways, I was deeply moved by the different aspects of the story, and even felt tears welling up a few times! That was completely unexpected.

Although Suzu Hirose’s character is the main focus, I thought the other characters were even more interesting. I especially liked Kanade who is passionate about traditional Japanese culture and who originally thought that turning the poems into a speed-game was heresy. 😆

This is the first movie in a three-part series, so I am really looking forward to watching the other two.

I hope you had a nice Friday!

こんばんは。How’s it going?

Today’s photo is from the Japanese tv show ふらっとあの街 旅ラン 10キロ which I have been enjoying lately. It might just be my new favorite program because it combines a two things that I love: traveling and running. In fact, I am so enthusiastic about running when on vacation, that the fact that this show exists has me stoked.

The various hosts are runners, and the show is basically them running in various travel destinations. It’s more of a jog, really, with plenty of stops for photos and food. It’s exactly what I love to do when visiting a new city. It’s so great to be able to cover decent distances on foot in a short amount of time. Definitely worth waking up an hour or two earlier than usual to get that sightseeing in with the sweet morning light.

Check out the program’s website or twitter feed to get a glimpse of the episodes. I think it’s so great!

I hope you had a good day. 😋
